Take Me to the Beach!

Many times, a vacation warrants adventure. Other times, your body goes on strike until you dress it in a bikini and take it to the beach. After my parents retired in Naples, Florida, I find myself needing more of these weekends… Follow me on Instagram: @TaraKalmanson -Tara

Shot of the Week

The city of Sorrento is situated along the Mediterranean, except the majority of the buildings and activity in town are located quite a bit up from the water. Sure, you can walk down no problem; it is the walk back up that isn’t so fun. Of course, it is all worth it for the views. And pizzerias. (Such as Pizzeria Aurora, which I wrote about in a TKGO post back in August.) –Karina for TKGO

Celeb Spotting and Architecture Peeping in Naples, Florida

What does Judge Judy have in common with a retired banker? You’ll find both walking their dogs (in strollers) in the gated community of Bay Colony in Naples, Florida. Naturally, the houses and condos they vacation in are often more impressive than their careers. While the series of high rises in Naples are full of condos worth seeing, the real high rollers have their own private houses on the beach at the end of Bay Colony Drive. (Tom Cruise was […]

Buenos Aires Beach Getaways

Friends and family in the Northern Hemisphere, I see you with your long coats and Facebook statuses about snow and hot chocolate. I am currently sitting in the air conditioning, while outside it is 93 degrees Fahrenheit on the first day of summer in Buenos Aires. You might be planning ski trips right about now, but everyone down here is all about the beach. Christmas time marks the start of beach escape season, and it seems as though everyone and […]

If there is a such thing as reincarnation, it wouldn’t be so bad to come back as any of the marine life in La Jolla Cove near San Diego, California. –Tara for TKGO

View from Sugarloaf

As New York gets colder, I can’t help but think how Karina’s new hemisphere is heating up. And so, my mind wanders to the beach town of South America: Rio de Janeiro. Sugarloaf is one of Rio’s most famous landmarks after Christ the Redeemer. Tourists can take gondolas to different tiers on the mountain for these killer views of the city. Above, one of the gondola bases is visible as we ascend to the top. Below, Christ the Redeemer shows […]

Shot of the Week

I am lucky to have family in paradise, a.k.a. Puerto Rico. Last summer I spent about two weeks with my aunt and cousin there, and the day I arrived my aunt and I went to the beach in San Juan. We arrived around 4 p.m. and I was exhausted, but as the sun began to set everything was bathed in yellows and pinks. I looked up through these palm trees and felt so serene. I still feel that calm, exhausted […]

Murder in Antarctica? Not quite. Antarctic terrain is heavily shaped by volcanic activity. Guides and researchers dug shallow pools near the ocean to allow the water under the sand (heated by the volcanic heat below the land) to mix with the near-freezing ocean water, creating a natural hot springs. At 30 below, we stripped and bathed. –Tara for TKGO

La Grotta Azzurra

I am back from a 12-day, post-graduation vacation to Italy with my family! While I could entertain you with missives about how delectable the food was or how stylish Italian men were — that will come — I have instead decided to start with a video from one of my favorite outings during our self guided tour through the boot-shaped peninsula. While staying in Sorrento, we took a day trip to the enchanting island of Capri (pronounced CAH-pree). We spent […]
